Why Should I Start a Blog?

blog [blawg, blog]: noun, verb
noun
1. a website containing the writer’s or group of writers’ own experiences, observations, opinions, etc., and often having links to other images or websites.
verb
2. to maintain or add new entries to a blog.

There are millions of blogs online, on platforms like WordPress, Blogger, Joomla, TypePad, LiveJournal, and Tumblr. Blogs are used to share thoughts and opinions, promote and sell products, educate people on a topic, or even display artwork or poetry. You name it, there’s probably a blog (or 5,000 blogs) dedicated to it.

I’ve had multiple blogs in various forms since 1996. For some reason, I feel compelled to share things with the world, from the exciting to the mundane, and blogging allows me to do that from the comfort of my desk. While the methods and options have changed drastically since I started, one thing has remained the same - ANYONE can start a blog.

But I Don’t Know Anything About Computers!

The beautiful part about blogging is that you don’t necessarily need to know a lot about computers to get one started. Most platforms have drag and drop options to pick a background, add pictures, etc. All you need to do is start typing!

I won’t lie to you - the more you know about computers, the easier it is to make your blog look fancy and professional. However, there are all kinds of workarounds to get the look you want without being a tech geek.

The Benefits of Blogging

  • Share whatever you want with as many people as you want
  • Find an outlet for stress, creative urges, or opinions you may not share in real life
  • Earn a side income (more on that later!)
  • Meet people with similar interests, goals, and life situations
  • Increase your knowledge of computers and social media
