Frequently Asked Questions
Design
Why should I hire Nuts and Bolts Media?
Let’s be real – there are thousands of companies and individuals offering web design, web hosting, and consulting services. However, in our experience, they are not all the same.
Nuts and Bolts Media promises the highest quality and service for every project, no matter how big or small. We complete each project in a timely, efficient manner, taking our clients’ vision and feedback into account along the way. Our work doesn’t end until our clients are thrilled with the results. Our work is also never outsourced; if you hire us, your project will be completed by us.
We’ve seen websites (both personal and business) that lack a cohesive, polished feel. We’ve seen underutilized social media accounts with little to no audience engagement. When those websites or accounts are managed by a company who claims to provide stellar services, it makes us sad. No one wants to spend hard-earned money on services that don’t get results, and at Nuts and Bolts Media, we believe you shouldn’t have to.
How does the process work?
When you request a quote from Nuts and Bolts Media, we will contact you within 24 hours to get more details about your project.
For most design projects, we require a 50% initial deposit via PayPal or credit card, after which your project will be added to our schedule. During the week when we begin your project, we’ll contact you for more information regarding your goals and preferences. From there, we’ll communicate as much or as little as you desire while completing your design. When you’ve approved the final website design and paid the remaining balance, we will move the new site to your domain.
Our designs are usually completed very quickly (exact timelines depend on the complexity of the project). We like to focus on one client at a time, allowing you the opportunity to express your ideas and guide the design process.
How soon will my design project be finished?
The timeline for design work is dependent on a number of factors. We strive to complete full designs within 4-6 weeks, while smaller projects such as avatars or logos are generally finished in 1-3 weeks. We ask that our clients inform us upfront if they need to meet a particular deadline so that we can prioritize the schedule accordingly.
What are your rates?
Nuts and Bolts Media offers reasonable, competitive rates for all of our services. We seek to build a unique package for each client based on their needs. Genesis conversions start at $1000 and full website designs start at $1500, with variable pricing depending on the specific elements requested.
If you have questions about our rates, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Once we know more about your needs, we can provide a pricing structure that works with your budget.
Do you offer payment plans?
Some of our favorite clients have been individuals. We understand that it may be difficult to find money to spend on your website if you don’t have a dedicated budget – however, that doesn’t mean that your website can’t be well-designed.
With an initial deposit, we do offer flexible payment plans to allow you to start your project quickly. We’ll build your new site in a test environment where you can click around, request changes, and get opinions from your friends and family while making payments that work for you. Once your account is paid in full, we’ll transition your site to reflect the new design.
What if I have questions after my project is complete?
We provide complimentary support for all projects for 30 days following completion. If you have questions once the 30-day window has passed, we will be glad to provide a quote for resolving your issue.
What if I’m not satisfied with my design?
Your satisfaction is our number one goal at Nuts and Bolts Media. In our minds, all clients should walk away from a transaction with us feeling that their design needs were met quickly, professionally, and completely. Due to the digital nature of our work, we only provide refunds in extreme circumstances, but we are more than willing to work with each client to find a solution.
Migrations
Why do migrations cost so much? Shouldn’t they be free?
Moving to a new blogging platform may not seem like a big deal, but there are a lot of considerations and steps involved in the process. It takes time to ensure that your posts and comments are formatted correctly, permalinks are updated, images are imported, and (most importantly) that your domain’s DNS is updated properly. While it’s definitely possible to migrate to self-hosted WordPress on your own, many of our clients are nervous about trying it for themselves, especially when it comes to choosing a web host and installing WordPress for the first time.
If you hire Nuts and Bolts Media to migrate your blog or website, you can feel confident that your content will be moved over safely and correctly and that everything will work the way it should on your new WordPress site. We are also available to help you get used to WordPress or find the resources you need to get started. Our migration clients often hire us for multiple sites once they experience the peace of mind that comes with the migration process.
Have questions about what’s involved in the price of a migration? See our migrations page or feel free to contact us.
What is the exact process for a migration?
We strive to make the migration process as quick and easy as possible and keep in contact with our clients every step of the way. That said, there are a number of steps involved to move a site from another platform to self-hosted WordPress.
1. Purchase a domain if needed.
For clients who use a blogname.blogspot.com or blogname.wordpress.com URL, it’s necessary to purchase a domain before migrating to self-hosted WordPress. We are happy to help our clients find a good domain name and register it with a reputable company like name.com.
2. Set up hosting and install WordPress.
The next step in the migration process involves setting up a web hosting account and installing WordPress. If clients need help choosing a host, we are happy to make recommendations based on their needs. Please note that we will need login information for your hosting account in order to install WordPress - we ask clients to change their passwords temporarily for security purposes.
3. Migrate content from old platform.
In this step, your posts and comments (and/or images depending on the migration package you choose) are transferred to your new WordPress installation. We invite clients to look over the new site to be sure all content made the journey safely. Again, this does require logging into your existing blog account to have access to your content, but we encourage the use of temporary passwords to protect your online identity.
4. Redirect old site to new URL.
If possible, we install code to redirect traffic to from your old site to your new one. For example, if someone visits oldsite.blogspot.com, they will be automatically sent to your new WordPress site. It’s also possible to redirect to a specific post so any links on other sites won’t be broken.
*Unfortunately this option is not available for clients coming from wordpress.com unless you choose to pay their redirection fee. This is just one reason we recommend starting out on self-hosted WordPress instead of a free platform.
Why does it cost more for a host-to-host transfer from GoDaddy, 1and1, etc.?
When a site is moved from one CPanel host to another, the process is fairly streamlined. However, when the new host doesn’t use CPanel, files must be uploaded and transferred manually, which is time-consuming and carries more risk for errors. We recommend CPanel hosting because it’s the most user-friendly and popular way to manage your WordPress website - hosts like GoDaddy and DreamHost use their own custom panels, which can be buggy and confusing for customers. Due to the extra care and attention required to move sites away from those hosts, there is an added cost for those transfers.
WordPress Support Services
What kind of support services does Nuts and Bolts Media offer?
We offer a number of WordPress support services to meet the needs of our clients. Here are some examples:
- Site management: A great option for those who don’t want to deal with the technical aspects of their websites (or would prefer to focus on creating content). Our site management plans include malware scans (and removal if needed), basic troubleshooting, plugin optimization, weekly backups, performance monitoring, and updates to your theme, plugins, and WordPress core. Everything is taken care of while you concentrate on the parts of your site that matter most to you.
- Website audits: Wondering how your site is performing and how it could be improved? Our comprehensive site audits include a review of your site in terms of the following: design, social media integration, content, exposure/traffic, SEO, load times and plugin usage, and monetization.
- Other services: We provide malware removal, SEO tutorials and management, plugin installation/optimization, and help with coding issues or broken sites on an as-needed basis, even if you aren’t an existing Nuts and Bolts client. Rates depend on the service requested.

What makes you qualified to provide technical services?
Owner Andrea Whitmer has 18 years of experience in coding, server administration, and design, giving her an excellent foundation for identifying and solving technical problems. However, she is also unwilling to gamble when it comes to the security and preservation of client websites - if a problem is beyond her skill set, she is happy to refer clients elsewhere. All sites are backed up prior to the completion of any code changes, fixes, or tweaks and we always encourage clients to change passwords temporarily while we work on their sites. All emails containing passwords, logins, etc. are deleted upon successful completion of a project.
I have a technical problem you didn’t mention. Can you help me?
Our list of tech support services is meant to provide examples of the type of work we do, but it’s not a comprehensive list. If you have a unique need, please contact us and we’ll discuss your situation in detail.
