It’s December! After a long weekend of sweatpants and leftover turkey, it’s time to turn our attention toward the holiday season (and all the gift giving that comes with it). If you were fortunate enough to miss out on all the chaos of Black Friday, never fear! There’s still plenty of time to shop for that special nerd in your life.
While no web designer expects gifts from clients, those of us who spend our days glued to a computer screen can still hope that our friends and family will buy us something truly amazing.
I know I can’t be the only one waiting for a loved one to recognize me for the geek I truly am and get me a present that will make my little pixelated virtual heart sing with joy!
Here are five gifts for web designers (or developers!) that will never disappoint.
1. Nerdy T-Shirts.
My “work uniform” consists of yoga pants, t-shirts, and flip flops. If someone wants to buy me the best gift ever, a comfortable shirt with a design-related message is a great place to start.
2. Cool Coffee Mugs
I’m not a coffee drinker, personally, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a great mug when I find one. Whatever fuel the designer in your life prefers, s/he will love drinking it from one of these:
3. Magnets and Stickers
All creative people love magnets and stickers. I’m pretty sure it’s the law.
4. Gadgets and Gizmos
This is NOT the part where I tell you to buy your favorite web designer a Macbook or iPad. Let’s get real - those are amazing gifts, but they aren’t practical for most of us. Here are a couple of cool, connected toys with a smaller price point.
This amazing doodad is called a Coin. Program in your credit or debit cards and leave them safely at home while you swipe this instead. It even connects to your phone to let you know if you accidentally leave it in a restaurant or store.
This is, without a doubt, one of the coolest technological advances I’ve seen. Not to mention the fact that it keeps my stuff organized. Let’s face it - I’m lucky to remember my keys when I leave the house, much less my wallet.
The Coin is currently available (until mid-December) at a 50% discount and will ship in Summer 2014.
Here’s a gizmo that saves my life on a regular basis. Ever find yourself out somewhere, no charger on hand, and your phone starts dying? Enter the Kero Nomad, a tiny charging cable you can keep on your keyring.
There are Nomads available for both Android and iPhone, and they come in blue or white. This is an awesome gift for anyone who must have a working phone at all times!
5. A Day to Unplug
This may seem like a cliché ending to a post about gifts for geeks, but I’m serious - we don’t get out enough. We just don’t.
Grab your favorite web designer and take him/her somewhere fun. Preferably somewhere with limited access to wifi. Whether it’s lunch, a movie, a walk, or a trip to the mall, sometimes designers need an intervention to help us step away from our clients and projects for awhile. Out of all the gifts we could receive, this is probably the most needed (no matter how hard we may fight you at first).
Outings like these don’t have to cost a dime - in fact, I’d rather go help a friend fold laundry than go out in public, simply because I could wear my usual bum attire. But no gift means more to me than spending time with my friends and family during the holidays, even if I need a gentle shove to actually go do it.
There you have it! Five great gifts for the web nerd in your life. Anything awesome I didn’t mention? Any gifts you’ve given (or received) that should have been included on this list?
